REAGAN, DRUGS AND ROCK ‘N’ ROLL
It is interesting that right-wing columnist Cal Thomas is concerned with rock music lyrics’ “allusion to drug use,” and will buy his country-Western records at stores that refuse to carry drug-oriented rock albums (Pop Eye, by Patrick Goldstein, Aug. 7).
What about country lyrics that sing about smoking and drinking (heavily, as in bars), cheating (adultery), rambling (irresponsibility), asking someone to sleep with you to “make it through the night,” and on and on. These songs are commonplace on popular country stations.
Personally, I like country music, and, unlike what right-wingers think, I am able to tell the difference between the fantasies in lyrics and the way I live my life.
Otherwise, I’d be pretty screwed up.
