San Diego
San Diego police homicide detectives found a sawed-off .410 shotgun and a .357-magnum revolver Monday in the car door panel of a man shot and wounded by an officer Friday, authorities said.
The weapons were found after the man, Jose Esqueda, gave written permission for police to search his car, Police Chief Bill Kolender said. The weapons were in the door on the driver’s side and both were loaded, police said. There were additional shells in the side panel.
Esqueda was shot and wounded by an officer late Friday after the officer stopped him for questioning at Mission Bay Park. The officer turned away for a minute and, when he turned back, Esqueda appeared to be reaching for something, police reports said. The officer fired once, hitting Esqueda in the face.
The incident is still under investigation.
The evidence found Monday will be presented to the district attorney’s office. Esqueda is expected to be charged with possession of illegal weapons, police said.
