A four-alarm fire razed a three-story condominium project under construction in North Park late Tuesday night.
About 100 firefighters battled the spectacular blaze that raced through the wooden structure at Howard Avenue and Ohio Street. There were no injuries.
Fire Department spokeswoman Ida A. Cheney said that the 30-unit condominium project was bordered by vacant lots on both sides and no other structures were threatened. Nevertheless, neighbors took the precaution of spraying water on their roofs.
The cause of the blaze, which began at 9:25 p.m. and was put out 55 minutes later, is under investigation, Cheney said.
The first fire unit to respond to the blaze, Engine 14 from a station two blocks away, was temporarily put out of action when power lines downed by flames landed under the truck. Other power lines had to be cooled with fire hoses.
A resident across the street from the project, being built by LFI Development Corp. according to a sign out front, said that a fence surrounded the construction site but the gates were never locked and he had seen transients entering the site at night.
