The two-week winery workers strike spread to the Franzia Brothers winery in Ripon. As the annual grape harvest intensified, about 200 workers walked off the job, joining strikers from the Christian Brothers, VieDel and Sierra wineries. Most of the struck plants are being operated by replacement workers, managers and clerical personnel. Although some grape growers expressed concern, an attorney for the Winery Employers Assn. in San Francisco said the group’s 12 members “intend to keep operating.” Union leaders said they may soon extend the strike to industry giant E&J; Gallo in Modesto.
