The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to oppose Proposition 64, the AIDS initiative sponsored by the political organization of ultraconservative Lyndon B. LaRouche. Board Chairman Pete Schabarum noted that the county Health Department had asked the supervisors to oppose the measure. Supervisor Ed Edelman said health officials have the power that they need to cope with the disease and the November ballot measure is not needed. The proposition would classify the condition of carrying acquired immune deficiency syndrome antibodies as a “communicable” disease and aims to force health officers to restrict the freedom of such carriers.
