NASA may bury wreckage from the shuttle Challenger in abandoned Minuteman missile silos next year, but recovered mementos carried aloft by the crew will be returned to states, institutions and individuals, officials said. Air Force Col. Edward O’Connor, who directed the search for shuttle wreckage, told United Press International he has proposed that Challenger’s wreckage be stored in one or two abandoned Minuteman silos at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Recovered mementos from the Jan. 28 explosion were part of Challenger’s official flight kit, which contained hundreds of flags, medallions, pins, decals and other items.
