A virtual blanket of 70 state troopers in cruisers--one for each mile of the busy Connecticut Turnpike stretch--stopped hundreds of trucks and autos today in what officials described as the state’s biggest crackdown ever.

Wednesday, the first day of the crackdown, hundreds of trucks and autos were stopped for safety checks on Interstate 95--the gateway to New England--and more than 500 tickets were issued in 12 hours for speeding and other violations.
