David Dawson, who starred at Culver City High and West Los Angeles College, is the first player in the 28-year history of the Connie Mack World Series to pitch two shutouts, earning him recognition as most valuable player.

Dawson led Norwalk-Cerritos to the championship with a 5-0 shutout of Memphis and a 3-0 victory over Farmington, N.M.. He struck out 15 and walked one in the 14 innings.

Cerritos-Norwalk then defeated Cincinnati, two-time defending champion, 6-3, to win the title.

Dawson, 19, also was a member of the Culver City Babe Ruth championship teams in 1981 and 1983. He transferred to Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa this year after West L.A. dropped baseball.

Mel Embree, who won six Ivy League high jump championships while at Harvard in the mid-1970s, was named assistant men’s and women’s track coach at Santa Monica College, Coach Skip Stolley said.

Embree, who graduated from Harvard and Harvard Law School, still high jumps over seven-feet and won the World Masters Games title in Toronto last summer.

Wayne Struble, who has coached Corsair pole vaulters since 1984, will remain an assistant coach at Santa Monica College, Stolley said.

Betty Ann Curry of West Los Angeles scored her first hole-in-one in 30 years of golfing at Penmar golf course. Rita Feldman of West Los Angeles and Steve Sussman of Santa Monica recently scored aces at the Rancho Park nine-hole course.
