Sylmar Quarterback Out of Season Opener
Sylmar High quarterback Adrian Valdez, out of action for two seasons with academic problems, has been sidelined by a wrist injury one day after he was ruled academically eligible to play for the Spartans.
Valdez injured his left wrist in practice Thursday and will be sidelined about one week, Sylmar Coach Tom Richards said. The senior quarterback is questionable for Sylmar’s opening game tonight against Verdugo Hills.
Valdez, who has never played a down of varsity football, completed a summer school typing course to gain eligibility.
“We finally get Valdez set to go mentally, and now he’s hurting physically,” Richards said.
If Valdez is unable to play against Verdugo Hills, junior backup Rick Negrete will start.
