On the 60th anniversary of the Spanish language daily newspaper’s founding, Jose Ignacio Lozano, grandson of the founder of La Opinion, was named publisher of the Los Angeles paper on Tuesday.

The appointment of the 32-year-old Lozano, who has been assistant publisher for 10 years, was announced by his father, Ignacio E. Lozano Jr., who has held the publisher’s post since 1953.

The older Lozano, 59, will remain as editor-in-chief and chairman of the privately held company that operates the 70,000-circulation paper, spokeswoman Mari Bellas said.

Ignacio Lozano Jr. was a boy when his father founded the paper on Mexican Independence Day in 1926 at a small building on South Main Street near downtown Los Angeles. Ignacio Lozano Jr. took over as publisher at age 26 after his father’s death in 1953.

Jose Ignacio Lozano said he will try during his tenure as publisher to push La Opinion’s circulation over the 100,000 figure daily. The paper’s circulation has climbed steadily in the past decade as Spanish-speaking immigrants have come to Southern California.
