A judge in Northern Ireland ruled that an allergy to potatoes affected a “pleasant and likable” Irishman’s personality, and dismissed charged against him. Just two packages of potato chips made 21-year-old Tony Doherty try to strangle his father with a tie, Judge Peter Gibson of Belfast Crown Court found. The family became “label watchers” for young Doherty when the allergy to potatoes, beef, onions and strawberries was discovered in a clinic in England. But the young man moved to a hostel, where the food was mostly potatoes and beef, and his son’s personality began to change, the elder Doherty said. The problem was solved by his son moving to new accommodations, where he could manage his own diet. Gibson said the defendant had his sympathy: “There could be many other offenders with the same problem.”
