Davis Upsets Pernfors in Sweden; Wilander Wins
STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Scott Davis upset fourth-seeded Mikael Pernfors of Sweden, 7-6, 6-4, Wednesday in the second round of the $435,000 Stockholm Open Grand Prix tennis tournament.
Mats Wilander of Swden, shaking off the rustiness of a seven-week layoff, scored a 6-4, 7-6 victory over Mike DePalmer, and Pat Cash of Australia outlasted Karel Novacek of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1.
Davis, a native Californian now living in Florida, used a hard serve to defeat Pernfors, a French Open finalist and a two-time NCAA singles champion at Georgia.
Pernfors, who missed a chance to qualify for next month’s Masters tournament, acknowledged the quality of Davis’ serve but said, “I had just as big problems with my own serve.”
