ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Freeway League
La Habra 32, Sonora 0--The Highlanders, who limited the Raiders to 42 total yards of offense in La Habra Stadium, finished tied for the league lead with Sunny Hills.
The three-time defending Freeway League champion Highlanders (4-1, 6-3) will represent the league in the Central Conference playoffs as its No. 1 team because of its 17-7 victory over Sunny Hills last week.
“This is really satisfying,” said Coach Bob Rau, whose teams have compiled a 22-3 league record in his five years at La Habra. “Our defense has done it for us all year, and our offense has progressed nicely.”
After a scoreless first quarter, La Habra took an 8-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the half when quarterback John Robertson scored on a six-yard run. The touchdown completed an 83-yard, 7-play drive. Robertson then completed a two-point conversion pass to Mike Dunnuck.
After a Sonora punt, Robertson, who completed 8 of 13 passes for 188 yards, led the Highlanders on a 63-yard, 6-play drive, which was capped on his 10-yard scoring pass to Dunnuck.
The Raiders (1-4, 2-8) had good field position three times after intercepting Robertson passes, but drives starting from La Habra’s 14-, 49- and 38-yard lines produced no points.
In the second half, Robertson threw his second touchdown pass, a 29-yard completion to Mike Segovia. Kicker Jim Dean added a 43-yard field goal moments later to increase the Highlander lead to 25-0. Running back Jim Hutcherson completed the scoring on a one-yard run.
