Far West Roundup : Santos and San Diego State Get Past Burnett and Wyoming

Todd Santos ran for one touchdown and threw for two more Saturday night to lead San Diego State to a 31-24 victory over Wyoming in a Western Athletic Conference football game at San Diego.

Santos’ second touchdown pass, a 35-yarder to Anthony Conyers, put the Aztecs ahead, 31-21, with 12:10 left to play.

Santos completed 15 of 28 passes for 236 yards and threw 2 interceptions. He also scored on a 1-yard run and threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Robert Awalt in the second quarter.

Wyoming quarterback Craig Burnett completed 37 of 65 pass attempts for 396 yards and 3 touchdowns. Burnett’s completions and attempts were the most ever against San Diego State.

Burnett’s three touchdown passes, a 14-yarder with Eric Coleman, a 6-yarder to Anthony Sargeant, and a 7-yarder to Graham Abraham, put Wyoming ahead, 21-13, early in the third quarter.

San Diego State is 5-1 in conference, 6-3 overall. Wyoming is 4-3 in the WAC, 6-5 overall.

Colorado State 32, New Mexico 27--Steve Bartalo rushed for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns, but the Rams needed a last-minute goal-line stand to turn back the Lobos at Fort Collins, Colo.

The Rams built a 23-7 lead, but Ned James threw his second and third touchdown passes to Terance Mathis to give the Lobos a 27-26 lead with nine minutes left.

Colorado State regained the lead on Kelly Stouffer’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Tod Tyrrell with four minutes left, and held on.
