San Diego Section Water Polo : Four Teams Advance to Quarterfinals
Vista, Mount Miguel, Helix and Fallbrook high schools won their matches Saturday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the San Diego Section water polo championships.
The quarterfinals will be played in doubleheaders at two sites Tuesday. At Mesa College, No. 8-seeded Fallbrook will play top-seeded Valhalla at 2 p.m. and No. 5 Vista faces No. 4 Mount Carmel at 3:45 p.m. At Mount Carmel High School, No. 7 Helix will play No. 2 University of San Diego High at 2 p.m. and No. 6 Mount Miguel will play No. 3 Coronado at 3:45 p.m.
Vista and Mount Carmel tied for second place in the Palomar League, splitting their two matches. Mount Carmel won the first meeting, 10-9, and Vista won the second, 11-10. The winner of the Mount Miguel-Coronado game will be the only team to be in the semifinals in the past three years. Coronado has defeated Mount Miguel in each of their meetings this year, 9-6 and 8-4.
The results of Saturday’s matches:
Vista 7, El Cajon 3--Sean Garrahy scored four goals and Bill Coffin, Kurt Groscup and Fred Ramsing added one goal each as Vista (18-3) advanced.
Mount Miguel 7, Crawford 5--Raul Ramalho scored four goals and Gabe Rogers added two as seventh-seeded Mount Miguel advanced.
Helix 18, Poway 7--Dan Comer scored six goals and teammate Cary Coleman added four more to lead Helix (17-6) over Poway (13-9).
Fallbrook 10, Orange Glen 8--Mike Dunn’s four goals keyed a comeback by Fallbrook.
