Southern Section Individual Tennis : McLin-Schmidt Overcome Spinner-Smith to Post Victory in Qualifying Tournament
Monica McLin and Noel Schmidt of El Toro High School defeated Laura Spinner and Jenny Smith of Mater Dei, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, Saturday to advance to the round of 16 in the Southern Section individual girls tennis championships at Irvine’s Heritage Park.
Also advancing in doubles were Michelle Foster and Jill Linhart of Capistrano Valley, Erin Hendricks and Natalie Hastings of Estancia and Tanya Johnson and Debra Goldberger of Edison.
In singles, Noelle Porter of San Clemente, ranked fourth in the Southern California Tennis Assn. 18 and under, advanced as did Debbie Graham of La Quinta, Dorey Brandt of Sonora and Julie Willett of Woodbridge.
The qualifying tournament at Irvine was one of four Saturday. The top four singles and doubles finishers in each tournament advance to Thursday’s round of 16 at the Racquet Club of Irvine. Semifinals and finals are Friday at the club.
