Defense Minister Humberto Ortega on Friday accused the U.S. Navy of creating a command center of American warships cruising off Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast.

“The guns of these warships can fire against Nicaraguan objectives at any moment,” Ortega said.

There was no immediate comment from U.S. authorities.

Ortega, commander of Nicaragua’s military forces, also reported “mercenary troop movements” on the country’s borders with Costa Rica and Honduras trying to provoke confrontations with the Nicaraguan army.

“Around there, confrontations are being provoked that would allow the U.S. government to direct its plans of aggression against Nicaragua,” he said.
