Palestinian, 14, Shot Dead; 3rd West Bank Death in Two Days

From Times Wire Services

A 14-year-old Palestinian boy was shot dead Friday when Israeli soldiers fired on stone throwers at a refugee camp, the Israeli army reported.

He was the third young Palestinian to die in two days of unrest in the occupied West Bank.

Thursday morning, two Palestinian students, both aged 22, were shot dead and at least 12 others were wounded when Israeli soldiers opened fire on demonstrators outside the campus of Birzeit University in Ramallah.

The victim of Friday’s shooting was identified as Majid Abu Dira by a spokesman for the Palestine Press Service, an alternative information service opposed to Israeli occupation and supportive of the outlawed Palestine Liberation Organization.

An Israeli army spokesman said the shooting took place at the Balata refugee camp, the largest of the West Bank’s estimated 19 camps, after youths threw stones at a patrol of border police.

“They were asked to stop,” the spokesman said of the youths, “and when they did not, warning shots were fired in the air in their direction. After they still did not stop, shots were fired at their feet.” The youth was killed by one of these shots, the spokesman said.
