Maoist guerrillas burst into a market town railroad station in the Andes, spraying gunfire that killed two people and wounded five, police said Wednesday.

Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrillas killed a policeman and a baggage handler in the assault Tuesday in Sicuani, 90 miles from this southern Peruvian tourist center.

Two policemen and three passengers were wounded. The rebels fled after a five-minute shootout with police.

The assault followed the Sendero takeover of a radio station on the city’s central square, where the guerrillas broadcast a tape calling on Peruvians to join their anti-government struggle.

The assaults broke a two-month-lull in Sendero attacks on the southern Cuzco state, Peru’s leading foreign tourist area.
