San Diego
Arsonists were responsible for a Sunday fire that destroyed a Quonset hut that housed plants for agricultural and landscaping classes at Mt. Carmel High School, San Diego fire officials said Tuesday.
Fire Capt. Jim Smidt said that he could not provide details about what caused the blaze but confirmed that a criminal investigation was being conducted.
The fire caused about $30,000 damage, but fire officials said the amount may go higher because numerous expensive plants could eventually die. Firefighters from San Diego and Poway departments were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to other buildings at the school, on Carmel Mountain Road.
