One Young Israeli in Five May Leave Country, Poll Finds
TEL AVIV — Almost one young Israeli in five is considering emigrating, according to an opinion poll conducted for the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption.
The figures, considered grim for a pioneer society built on Jewish immigration, appear to reflect disillusionment with Israel’s relatively low standard of living and high taxes compared with Western industrialized countries.
Only a minority cited the Arab-Israeli conflict as a cause of emigration.
The survey, reported in Israeli newspapers Tuesday, found that 19% of Israelis in the 18-29 age group said they might emigrate, many citing employment as the main reason for going abroad.
