Aquino, Soldiers Hand Out Christmas Gifts

MANILA — President Corazon Aquino, taking up a favorite project of former first lady Imelda Marcos, led soldiers into a housing project Tuesday to hand out the first batch of 180,000 Christmas presents donated to the poor.
Aquino flew by helicopter to a government settlement on the outskirts of Manila hours after the ringing of church bells ushered in the start of Misa de Gallo, nine dawn Masses ending on Christmas in Asia’s only Roman Catholic nation.
