A former Yuba County deputy sheriff who has publicly accused county authorities of covering up a 1982 murder was ordered to stand trial on insurance fraud and drug charges for allegedly faking a break-in at his home and collecting more than $17,000 from an insurance company. William H. Hill, 29, of Paradise also was charged with having hashish and marijuana in his home. Earlier this month, he was charged with engineering the theft of a Yuba County sheriff’s report on the April, 1982, murder of Brenda Ferreira and giving copies to several news organizations. He claimed on a September “60 Minutes” telecast that the murder was being covered up. Hill was fired in September, 1985, and accused of stealing a wallet containing $200 from a prisoner. He was acquitted by a jury.
