Year-Round Schools in L.A.
I cannot agree with your editorial that year-round schools are a good idea.
The plan undoubtedly fulfills the legal requirements as to number of school days per year. However, it completely ignores the fact that the quality of education will suffer during the hot and smoggy summer season. There can be very little learning in a swelteringly hot classroom.
If comfort has no bearing on productivity, why is it that in the same schools with unair-conditioned classrooms, the offices of principals and other administrators are air-cooled?
If year-round schools are the only solution to the problem of overcrowding, then air-conditioning the classrooms should precede the implementation of this plan.
