Irvine Valley College in Irvine and Saddleback College in Mission Viejo are among 23 community colleges in the state picked as sites for a new program designed to make it easier for disabled students to use computers, the California Community Colleges chancellor’s office in Sacramento announced.

The two colleges, both part of Saddleback Community College District, are the only ones in the county selected for participation.

The state chancellor’s office said a $1.5-million grant will be distributed among the 23 community colleges in the program. The colleges will use the money to adapt computers for handicapped students.

“For example, a person with a mild brain injury who has difficulty seeing the computer screen might be assisted by a large print display or talking computer,” said a spokeswoman for the chancellor’s office.

The computer project is a joint effort of the state Community College Foundation and the state Department of Rehabilitation.
