A Costa Mesa man is in critical condition after he was stabbed in the chest Friday night by a man who tried to steal his car from a supermarket parking lot.

Hector Pineda Aguiluz, 23, was in his car at the Stater Brothers market at 2200 Newport Blvd. when a man police described as about 32 years old, with blond hair and a mustache, approached him and attempted to take the car.

Costa Mesa Police Lt. Leslie Harrison said that when Aguiluz resisted, the suspect stabbed him in the chest and ran. Aquiluz managed to walk to a liquor store across the street for help. He was taken to Fountain Valley Community Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
