San Diego High School Basketball : Morse Defeats Mira Mesa, 60-54, in Kiwanis Unlimited Title Game

On Friday night, the Morse High School boys’ basketball team defeated three-time San Diego Section champion Poway with a fast-break offense that has been a Morse tradition. Saturday night in the Kiwanis Tournament Unlimited Division championship game at Serra High, Morse defeated Mira Mesa, 60-54, from the free-throw line.

Morse (6-1) made 20 of 34 free throws and held off numerous Mira Mesa rallies to win in the first of three meetings between the two City Eastern League rivals.

Mira Mesa (8-1) led, 17-15, after the first quarter. Then Morse guard Rey Parson scored six unanswered points to give Morse a 25-21 lead with 3:48 left in the half. It was a lead Morse would not lose.

Mira Mesa cut a 41-34 Morse third-quarter advantage to 41-40 with 1:16 left in the quarter. Morse then scored 12 straight points to put the game out of reach. Willie Russell made two foul shots and Wille Davis added two more and a fast-break layup. Mira Mesa tried to work for a good shot to stop the Morse streak but Parson made two steals and turned each into layups. After Davis made two more foul shots, Morse led 53-40 with 4:10 left.

Parson had 18 points to lead Morse and Russell added 11. Mira Mesa was led by Ray Rowe, who had 22 points, 14 in the first half. David Lee added 13 for Mira Mesa before fouling out with 2:46 left in the fourth quarter.

KIWANIS TOURNAMENT

In the unlimited division:

Madison 61, Poway 57 (2 OT)--Poway had the last shot in regulation and in the first overtime period but could not make either as Madison (7-2) finished third. Robbie Robinson led Madison with 18 points and Mike Maine added 10. The score was tied, 53-53, after regulation and 57-57 after the first overtime. Gary Anderson scored 21 points and Dave Delaney added 20 for Poway (5-2), which lost its second straight.

Mt. Carmel 48, Patrick Henry 42--Mt. Carmel outscored Patrick Henry, 15-1, in the second quarter and went on to win the consolation championship. Mike Wasserburger led Mt. Carmel with 12 points and Tim Coleman added 11. Terrence Russell led Patrick Henry with 13.

Briefly--Monte Vista defeated Mount Miguel (4-6), 58-56, in the third-place game of the consolation bracket.

In the limited division:

Los Alamitos 70, La Jolla 48--Forward Mo Warner scored 20 points, had 11 rebounds and 4 steals to lead Los Alamitos to an easy victory in the championship game. Warner, the division’s most valuable player, helped the Griffins (9-3) build a 36-20 halftime lead. Guard Ryan Blossey added 16 for Los Alamitos and Matt Bertaux led La Jolla (8-4) with 14.

Point Loma 70, Castle Park 68--Bob Brasher scored after getting his own rebound to put Point Loma ahead, 69-68, with less than a minute remaining and the Pointers held on to finish third. Brasher led Point Loma (6-6) with 16 points and Marcel Brown added 12. Javier Nunez paced Castle Park (5-4) with 21. .

Hoover 61, Helix 50--Michael Walker scored 17 points and Tyrone Bell added 12 to lead Hoover (4-8) to a fifth-place finish.

Chula Vista 66, Bonita Vista 40--Chula Vista held Bonita Vista’s starting front line to 12 points to finish third in the consolation bracket. Richard Hancock led Chula Vista (7-4) with 17 points and Tony Hyner added 12. Mike Gallardo paced Bonita Vista (2-6) with 11. .

Briefly--El Capitan defeated Crawford, 61-50, to win the consolation title. Valhalla defeated Grossmont, 63-45, for fifth place in the consolation bracket.

In the classified division:

St. Augustine 68, Clairemont 65--Charlie Applegate scored 17 points to lead St. Augustine (8-1) to the division title. Jason Deal and Ray McDavid each scored 21 points to lead Clairemont (10-2).

Mission Bay 64, Marian 53--Ernest Johnson scored 9 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter as Mission Bay finished third. Trailing, 41-40, after three quarters, Mission Bay (4-3) used a half-court trap defense to outscore Marian, 24-12. Johnson also had 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals. Keith Henderson led Mission Bay with 16 points. Lauden Slager of Marian (4-3) led all scorers with 27.

Ramona 68, San Pasqual 44--John Schweitzer scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the second half as Ramona won the consolation championship. Ramona (7-4) extended a six-point halftime lead by outscoring San Pasqual (1-6), 43-25, in the second half. John Liechty added 11 points and 7 assists for Ramona.

Lincoln 72, San Diego 52--Kenny Thompson scored 29 points to lead Lincoln (3-6) to third place in the consolation bracket. San Diego was paced by Tony Wines, who scored 14.

GIRLS

KIWANIS TOURNAMENT In the unlimited division:

Point Loma 85, Fallbrook 34--Terri Mann scored 34 points and had 24 rebounds and sophomore Monica Filer added 23 points as Point Loma (11-0) won the division championship. It was the 98th straight victory at home and 36th overall for the Pointers.

Vista 43, Santana 27--Chris Enger scored nine points to lead Vista (10-2) to a third-place finish. Leslie Ellis paced Santana (8-3) with 12.

In the limited division:

Grossmont 54, Calexico 51--Shannon Embrey scored 12 points to lead Grossmont (10-0) over Calexico (9-1) in the division title game.
