The Nation : Speakes’ Post Stays Open
Ann Dore McLaughlin, mentioned as a possible successor to Larry Speakes as chief White House press spokesman, resigned as undersecretary of the Interior to go back to school. McLaughlin, who will leave March 1, said she will study business and international economics and lecture on public policy at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She said that she had talked with the White House about the Speakes job but preferred to go to Wharton. Speakes will become a senior vice president at a Wall Street firm in February.
