San Diego
Contrary to an increase in unruly fan behavior at sporting events, Holiday Bowl security officials said Wednesday they were pleased with the conduct of the 59,473 football fans who packed Jack Murphy Stadium to see the San Diego State University Aztecs battle the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa won, 39-38.
“The fan behavior was outstanding,” said Lt. Bob Jones, stadium events coordinator for the San Diego Police Department.
Jones said that although there were 12 misdemeanor citations, 26 people removed from the stadium and three arrests made during the course of the game, the overall behavior of the crowd was exemplary considering its size.
“You had the whole population of some cities in the stadium. . . . The crowd was remarkable,” Jones said.
Last year, there were 42,324 people at the game. Jones said police made one arrest, cited nine people and ejected 15.
He said most of the fan problems this year were alcohol-related.
