Historian G. Dangerfield, 82, Dies
George Dangerfield, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian whose specialty involved the political and philosophical struggles of England and Ireland, died Saturday at Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara. He was 82.
A 1927 graduate of Oxford University, Dangerfield came to the United States in 1930 and moved to Santa Barbara in 1950 after wartime service in the U.S. Army.
In 1952 he wrote “The Era of Good Feelings,” which won the Pulitzer and Bancroft prizes the following year.
His other works include “The Strange Death of Liberal England” and “The Damnable Question: A Study in Anglo-Irish Relations.”
Dangerfield is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, two daughters, a son, a sister and brother.
