College Digest : BASKETBALL : CSUN Men Lose Pat Bolden to Knee Surgery and Ken Moulden to Season-Long Suspension

Cal State Northridge swingman Pat Bolden missed Monday’s game against Cal State Hayward, a 70-59 loss, because of torn cartilage in his knee. Bolden will undergo arthroscopic surgery later this week. He is expected to be out for at least three weeks.

Bolden injured the knee last week against Alabama Huntsville when he landed off-balance after colliding with a Huntsville player on an attempted slam dunk. He had averaged 8.3 points a game.

Kennard Moulden, a 6-5 junior guard, has been suspended from the CSUN basketball team for personal problems, a Northridge official said Tuesday. The source, who asked not to be identified, said Moulden will not return this season, but added that Moulden could return next year. “It’s up to him,” the official said. “If he can make the corrections in his personal life and get his act together, he could come back.”

Moulden averaged 4.9 points coming off the bench for the Matadors.

Master’s College has lost two players from its basketball program. Matt Cook, a 6-7 transfer from Victor Valley College, dropped out of school for personal reasons, Coach Randy Stem said. Another player, Jeff Boehm, last year’s starting point guard, had sat out the first part of this season trying to raise his grade-point average, but, Stem said, he was unable to get his grades above the school-mandated 2.0 grade-point level.

Stem said he was “disappointed,” to lose Cook and Boehm. “I expected both of these players to step in and help us right away.”

Stem, who has suffered through the worst season of his coaching career this season (the Mustangs have lost their first 11 games), said last week’s 66-64 loss to CSUN was somewhat encouraging. “But, we still didn’t play for 40 minutes,” he said. “We’ve shown at times that we’re a good team, but at other times we don’t play well at all. Against Northridge, we played the first 10 minutes of the second half like we just wanted to get out of the gym.”

Strangely, Master’s is making 51% of its attempts from three-point range, but only 46% of its attempts overall. Against CSUN, the Mustangs made 11 of 13 three-point shots. Said Stem: “Who said basketball is a sane sport?”

Denise Sitton, a forward on CSUN’s women’s basketball team, has moved into second-place on the school’s all-time scoring list. The 6-1 senior has a total of 1,139 career points, leaving her 125 points behind Paula Moran, who played from 1975-78. Sitton also ranks fifth among California Collegiate Athletic Assn. career scorers.

Quotebook: Before last Saturday’s Moorpark-East L.A. game, which was played as a preliminary to the Clippers-Boston Celtics game at the Sports Arena, East L.A. Coach Jim McFarland told a reporter that his team’s record was 1-10 . . . “and soon to be 1-11.”

Said a technician for KMPC Radio: “It’s the Clippers’ farm team.”

Keeping tabs: Joe Campanella, a sophomore at Columbia and a former All-Southern Section guard at Crespi High, scored 10 points in the Lions’ 91-67 loss to Pepperdine in the consolation game of the Marquette tournament on Saturday.
