An Israeli cancer victim Sunday received a long-awaited bone marrow transplant from his sister, who waged an international campaign to leave the Soviet Union to try to save his life, the Itim news agency reported.

But Mikhail Shirman’s prospects of recovering from leukemia are slim, his doctors said.

They blamed the eight-month wait between his sister’s application for an exit visa and her arrival in Israel for dimming his chances.

Shirman, 30, left the Soviet Union in 1980. His sister, Inessa Fleurova, was allowed to come to Israel last November.
