Rep. Burton Takes Oath at Home
WASHINGTON — Rep. Sala Burton (D-Calif.), who underwent colon surgery last August for removal of a malignant tumor, took the oath of office for her second full House term today at her home, after she complained of feeling faint.
The oath was administered at Mrs. Burton’s home on Capitol Hill by Democratic Rep. Don Edwards, dean of the California congressional delegation, who acted on the authority of a House-passed resolution. “She took the oath, signed all the papers and gave me a bottle of champagne,” Edwards said. “I’m confident that if she keeps progressing like she is, she’ll be back pretty soon.” Burton succeeded her husband, Rep. Phillip Burton, in the House when he died in 1983.
