Bonds Relieved as Hart Beats Canyon, 78-49

Despite quarterbacking the Hart High football team to the Northwestern Conference championship, something was lacking in Jim Bonds’ high school career.

Until Tuesday night.

Bonds was one of four Indians to score in double figures and consistently shred Canyon’s full-court press defense in Hart’s 78-49 win over the Cowboys in a nonleague game at home.

“I really wanted it tonight,” said Bonds, who scored 12 points. “I hadn’t beaten Canyon in football or basketball in two years.”

When reminded that Hart and Canyon split their two basketball games last season, Bonds replied: “That’s right. But I fouled out of the game we won in the first half.”

But more important than settling old scores, Hart (6-7), which recently switched to a three-guard offense because of a lack of height, found an inside force.

Brian Allen, a 6-3 sophomore forward, took advantage of several one-on-one situations and scored 13 points. He also had six rebounds.

“He’s one of the top sophomores around and tonight his talent started to surface,” Hart Coach Doug Michelson said. “Jim Bonds, Eric Arnold and Brian Allen each played what were clearly their best games of the season.”

For Hart, which opens Foothill League play Friday, the solid performance couldn’t have come at a better time.

“This was an important game because it gives us momentum and confidence,” Michelson said. “We’ve played a tough schedule and I think it’s helped.”

Canyon (11-4), which has averaged 71 points while playing a soft schedule, was outrebounded, 47-27, and shot only 28%.

Steve Valenzuela, who scored a game-high 20 points, led Hart with 10 rebounds. Four other Indians had at least six rebounds.

Greg Paskwietz, who averages 22 points, had difficulty finding open shots and was held to 17 points on 8 for 18 shooting. Although Hart concentrated on Paskwietz, Canyon was unable to take advantage.
