El Refugio, a transitional housing project for 15 to 20 homeless people of the Pico-Union area, will be dedicated Sunday. A project of El Rescate, a legal and social service center for Central American refugees, the residence is expected to predominantly serve recently arrived people from Central America.

In addition to housing, it will provide orientation and survival skills such as English classes, job and housing counseling. Funding for rehabilitation of the facility and operational costs has been provided by California State Emergency Shelter Program, the Methodist, Lutheran and Presbyterian churches and the Ford Foundation.

The outdoor dedication, including an interfaith service led by Bishop Medardo Gomez of the Salvadoran Lutheran Synod of El Salvador, will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., starting at Angelica Lutheran Church 1345 S. Burlington, with a procession to El Refugio, at 1565 West 14th St. (at Burlington).
