San Diego Roundup : Gwynn, Mattingly to Speak at Coaches Baseball Clinic

Tony Gwynn of the Padres and Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees will join some of the nation’s top collegiate baseball coaches at the American Baseball Coaches Assn. convention today through Sunday at the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel.

Coaches of all levels are welcome to attend. The registration fee is $20, which covers entrance to all clinics. Registration begins at 1 p.m. at the hotel.

The clinics start at 9 a.m. Saturday and run through Sunday evening. A complete schedule is available at the registration desk.

Some of the clinics are “Let’s Talk Hitting” with Mattingly; “Pitching Absolutes” by Tom House of the Texas Rangers; “Developing the First Baseman” by Mark Marques, Stanford University coach, and “Developing the Modern Catcher” by Skip Bertman, at Louisiana State coach.

Don Coryell, former Charger coach, will be honored at “The March to the 1988 San Diego Super Bowl” dinner Wednesday in the Champagne Ballroom of the Sheraton Harbor Island East Hotel.

Master of ceremonies will be Ted Leitner, a broadcaster, and Merlin Olsen, a member of the National Football League Hall of Fame, will be the guest speaker.

Cost is $150 per person or $1,200 for a table of eight. Some of the proceeds will be donated to the San Diego Super Bowl Task Force fund. For reservations, make checks payable to the Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce and mail them to the Chamber Super Bowl Task Force, Suite 1600, 110 West C St., San Diego 92101.

A Thursday gymnastics demonstration by Sabrina Mar and Doe Yamashiro, U.S. National team members, was switched to 4 p.m. today in the St. Tropez room of the San Diego Hilton Hotel.

Youth League and high school football coaches are welcome to attend the 20th annual El Camino High coaching clinic Saturday at El Camino High School.

Registration, which is $15, will be held from 7:45 to 8:50 a.m. The first session is at 9 a.m. There will be three speakers in the morning and two in the afternoon.

Scheduled speakers include Tom Pack, coach of San Diego Section 3-A champion Fallbrook.

The California Youth Soccer Assn., Southern Division, will hold a youth soccer tournament Saturday and Sunday at 22 sites in El Cajon.
