San Diego Women’s Basketball : Haynes Helps SDSU to Its First PCAA Victory
Forward Jessica Haynes had 21 points and 11 rebounds as San Diego State University beat Cal State Fullerton, 68-59, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game played Saturday night in SDSU’s Peterson Gym.
The Aztecs (1-2 in the PCAA, 4-8 overall) led the entire game and were ahead at halftime, 37-28. Although Fullerton outrebounded SDSU, 45-34, the Titans committed 26 turnovers to the Aztecs’ 17.
Shelda Arceneaux added 11 points and Brooke Meadows 10 for SDSU. Amy Torczon led Fullerton with 18 points.
United States International University 102, UC Riverside 80--Sonya Carter scored 29 points to lead the Gulls past the Highlanders in a nonconference game at La Jolla. Fiona Murray added 15 points and Carolyn Davis had 11 rebounds for USIU (7-6). Riverside (9-3) was led by Tonie Carter with 23 points and Laura Spellacy with 16.
Pomona-Pitzer 68, Millikin 54--The Sagehens (11-2) beat Millikin University (Ill.) for the championship of the UCSD Coke Classic. Regina Juniel, the tournament’s most valuable player, paced Pomona-Pitzer with 35 points and 11 rebounds.
UC San Diego 69, Peru State 58--Tracy Ragatz scored 22 points to help the host Tritons (8-6) to a third-place finish in the UCSD Coke Classic. Connie Viner led Peru State (Neb.) with 15 points. Beth Copeland and Shanda Elzy each had 10 rebounds for UCSD. Ragatz was named to the all-tournament team.
