College Basketball Roundup : Syracuse Is Saved by Monroe

Boston College had a defense ready for fifth-ranked and unbeaten Syracuse Tuesday night, but the Eagles couldn’t stop the hot shooting of guard Greg Monroe.

“We had to pack in the zone, but Monroe hurt us from the outside,” Boston College Coach Jim O’Brien said of Monroe’s five three-point goals that helped the Orangemen to a 76-64 Big East victory at Boston. “We had to take away the inside and give them the outside.”

Boston College (7-6 and 0-3), led 44-35 midway through the second half before Syracuse started a 17-2 run that featured two consecutive three-pointers by Monroe, who finished with a game-high 23 points.

Syracuse improved to 15-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference, its best start ever under Coach Jim Boeheim.

Cornell 74, Colgate 57--Senior guard John Bajusz and junior forward Mike Millane scored 18 points each to lead the Big Red, who handed the Raiders their 32nd straight defeat over two seasons, at Milton, N.Y. Colgate is 0-13; Cornell is 4-6..

Texas A&M; 68, Texas 52--Todd Holloway scored a team-high 21 points as the Aggies (10-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference) hit 69.2% of their shots in downing the Longhorns (8-9 and 1-3).

The Aggies, who hit 27 of 39 shots for the game, made their first 10 field goals and finished the first half making 13 of 17.

Army 62, Manhattan 48--Kevin Houston, the nation’s leading scorer, score 26 of his 36 points in the second half to lead the Cadets to victory at New York. Houston, averaging 31 points per game, made 11 of 22 field goal attempts and sank all 13 of his free throws.
