San Diego High School Basketball : Mount Miguel Holds On to Beat Santana, 62-60

Art Edge, Mount Miguel High School’s basketball coach, said he’s heard the question. In fact, he says, he even lives it.

What’s wrong with the Matador basketball team?

“I go home each night and play it over and over in my mental VCR,” Edge said. “I ask myself, ‘What do we need to do to get going?’ ”

He may have found some answers Tuesday night, as Mount Miguel held on to defeat Santana, 62-60, in a Grossmont League game at Mount Miguel.

The victory improved the Matadors’ league record to 4-3 and their overall record to 6-7. However, the league favorites are still in fourth place, two games behind the leaders. Santana (4-2, 8-5) fell a game behind Monte Vista and Valhalla.

“I just think it’s a matter of us trying to come together as a team,” Edge said. “We’re not consistent.”

It helped Tuesday that Edge’s 6-3 forward, Haywood Mathis, played consistently. Mathis scored a game high 23 points, including 8 in the fourth quarter.

Still, the Matadors couldn’t shake Santana. Mount Miguel led, 47-38, after three quarters, but the Sultans rallied. Santana closed to within two late in the game, but two baskets by Mathis kept Mount Miguel in front.

Santana had one last chance to tie, but Tim Barry’s driving 10-foot shot fell off the front of the rim at the buzzer.
