An elderly couple suffered minor injuries Thursday morning when a fire gutted their two-story home in Southeast San Diego, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to a call of a fire in the 3000 block of Manos Drive about 8:18 a.m. and discovered the home engulfed in flame, San Diego Fire Department spokesman Larry Carlson said. Total damage to the residence was estimated at $140,000.

Paciencia Carmona, 68, was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where she was reported in good condition with minor burns on her face, hospital spokeswoman Sheri Smith said. Her husband, Jose Carmona, 72, was treated for smoke inhalation and released from the hospital.

Carlson said the fire started in a bedroom on the first floor and quickly spread through the rest of the house, Carlson said. Paciencia Carmona may have been slightly burned when she started battling the blaze, he added.

Baldormero Reyes, who was staying with the couple, called the Fire Department from the home. Reyes and another adult were not injured.

The house belonged to Carmona’s son, Alfredo, who is serving in Guam with the U.S. Navy. It took 24 firefighters about 15 minutes to put out the blaze.

The Metro Arson Strike Team was investigating the cause of the fire, though there was no indication that the blaze was of suspicious origin, Carlson said.
