A federal grand jury charged former Washington Deputy Mayor Alphonse Hill with extorting more than $40,000 from city contractors over a seven-year period. The 11-count indictment, which charges extortion, fraud and tax evasion, alleges that Hill helped a friend’s accounting firm secure government contracts with the District of Columbia that would continue to benefit the deputy mayor after he left office. Hill, who resigned after admitting he accepted $3,000 from longtime friend James Hill, owner of the accounting firm, was deputy mayor for financial management.
