ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Sea View League : Sea Kings Upset by Estancia : Mooney Has 29 in 61-56 Win Over Corona del Mar
Estancia High School played the role of spoiler in the Sea View League Friday as the Eagles upset fourth-rated Corona del Mar, 61-56, in front of a capacity crowd at Corona del Mar.
With their fourth straight victory, the Eagles (2-0, 8-8) avenged an early December loss to the Sea Kings (1-1, 14-5) in the finals of the Estancia Tournament.
Estancia, which trailed the entire first half, took the lead, 39-38, with 1:28 left in the third quarter when senior guard Kyle Mooney scored on a layup and was fouled.
Mooney, who led all scorers with 29 points, kept the Eagles close throughout the game. He was 10 of 18 from the field and 9 of 11 from the free-throw line.
“Mooney was just awesome tonight,” Eagle Coach Joe Reid said. “This is the biggest upset I’ve been around.”
Corona del Mar, which led at the half, 35-29, was led by Markus Mueller-Stach with 12 points.
Tustin 64, Saddleback 59 (OT)--Tustin outscored Saddleback, 7-2, in the overtime period as Leo Parker, who had 15 points in the game, scored four points.
Brad Cantrell led Tustin with 18 points.
Saddleback was led by Gylan Dottin’s 18 points.
Tustin forward Rog Middleton, Orange County’s leading scorer (23.7 points a game), was held to 7 points.
University 57, Newport Harbor 53--Lasse Glassen and Eric Olen scored 15 points each and Steve Stolzoff 10 for the Trojans (2-0, 13-4).
Jim Geerlings scored 18 points and Drew Sheward scored 12 and had 8 assists for Newport Harbor.
