The World : Sikhs Kill Party Leader
Sikh extremists making hit-and-run attacks killed Joginder Pal Pandey, a leader of India’s governing Congress-I Party, and eight other people in Punjab state, police reported. An indefinite curfew was ordered in Ludhiana, Punjab’s largest city, after Pandey and his bodyguard, both Hindus, were slain. Other victims included two teen-age girls, two schoolteachers, two shopkeepers and a doctor. Extremists seeking to make Punjab an independent Sikh nation have killed 53 people in the state so far this year.
