City schools trustees agreed Tuesday to consider exempting some development projects from new state-sanctioned developer fees approved earlier this month.

Supt. Tom Payzant said Tuesday that district officials are compiling a report on the impact the exemptions would have on school district revenue. The study is scheduled to be presented to school trustees at their next meeting Jan. 27.

But Payzant warned that if the exemptions will cost the district substantial revenue, he will not recommend that they be adopted.

On Jan. 6, the San Diego Unified School District adopted a new plan to collect fees of $1.50 per square foot on all new residential construction, and 25 cents per square foot on new industrial and commercial construction. The plan, adopted under the terms of a new state law, would yield the cash-starved district a total of $81.5 million by the year 2000.

Developers have argued that longstanding projects, low-income housing downtown, day care facilities and other construction should be exempted from the new fees.
