“Harvest Jazz: McCoy Tyner.” Sony. $29.95. Tyner’s piano weaves hypnotic rhythmic webs, conveying a sense of spiritual intensity. Very often the influence of his mentor John Coltrane is detectable. His quintet includes Joe Ford on alto saxophone and a remarkable violinist, John Blake. Best pieces are the last two, for which vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson adds his four mallets to the proceedings. The outdoor ambiance of the Paul Masson winery is attractive, but as usual there are absurd interruptions, with the musicians spouting cliches (“Music is a part of life”) that serve only to break the mood.
