The Committee to Reelect Harold Washington asked state officials Thursday to investigate the distribution of campaign literature linking the mayor with controversial Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

Washington’s campaign manager, Kenneth Glover, asked the Illinois attorney general’s office and the Illinois Board of Elections to determine if any election code violations occurred.

No one has claimed responsibility for distributing the flyers, which Washington’s campaign contends are aimed at stirring up fears in the city’s white communities about his possible election to a second term. Washington became the city’s first black mayor in 1983.
