ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Roundup : Servite Makes Its Free Throws to Beat Bishop Amat
Accurate free-throw shooting helped Servite High School defeat Bishop Amat Friday night, 76-69, in an Angelus League game at La Puente.
The Friars made 13 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter and 22 of 27 in the game. The Lancers made 11 of 19 from the line.
Servite outscored Bishop Amat, 22-11, in the second quarter to take a 35-24 halftime lead. But the Lancers, led by guards Stephon Page and Terry Lamb, outscored the Friars, 30-18, in the third quarter to take a 54-53 lead going into the final period.
Brian Kenney led Servite with 21 points, Shawn Sullivan had 12 and Tony Smalley, James Rollins and Nick Marusich each added 10. Lamb led Bishop Amat with 22 points and Page added 21.
Mater Dei 58, Bishop Montgomery 41--The Monarchs cruised to their 48th consecutive victory in the Angelus League spanning six seasons as center LeRon Ellis scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds at Mater Dei.
The Monarchs made only 18 of 44 field goal attempts, but Ellis was 6 of 12 from the floor and 8 of 15 at the free-throw line. Mater Dei will meet Ocean View at 8 tonight in a nonleague game at Huntington Beach.
In the Collegiate League:
St. Margaret’s 69, West Shores 34--Chris Cooper led St. Margaret’s (4-0, 13-1) with 29 points. Mark Flather and Mark Campaigne each added 12 points and Dan Campaigne scored 11.
In the Freeway League:
Fullerton 46, Sonora 43--David Sawyer scored a basket with 40 seconds left to break a 43-43 tie for the Indians (7-1). Sawyer finished with 12 points and teammate Mike Hetland 15.
David Morris scored 23 for the Raiders (3-5, 7-12).
Buena Park 64, Troy 55--Kevin Graddy scored 24 points, 14 in the second half, as the Coyotes (3-5, 10-9) came back to win at home. Buena Park outscored Troy (6-2 in league), 23-16, in the fourth quarter as Mike Toscano made 9 of 10 free throws. Toscano scored 13 points.
Sunny Hills 68, La Habra 43--Brian McCloskey scored 16 points and David Chisum added 15 to lead the Lancers (4-4, 12-8) over the Highlanders (1-7) at Sunny Hills.
In the Garden Grove League:
Los Amigos 88, Rancho Alamitos 61--Gene Altamirano scored a career-high 34 points, J. J. Jenkins had 26 and Dave Leonard had 16 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Lobos at Los Amigos.
Randy Moralez led the Vaqueros with 27 points. Craig Paquette, who was averaging 24, was held to seven.
Bolsa Grande 85, Santiago 66--Nam Cao scored 13 points, Joe Small 22, and Thurman Brown 13 for first-place Bolsa Grande (6-0).
Edwin Lezama scored 11 for Santiago (0-6, 3-15).
In the Olympic League:
Orange Lutheran 67, Ontario Christian 65--Gaylord Greene missed the first of a one-and-one with five seconds left, but Brad Buffe grabbed the rebound and hit a short jumper to give Orange Lutheran the victory at home. John Gorzeman scored 42 for Ontario Christian, but none of his teammates reached double figures.
Geoff McArthur added 16 for Orange Lutheran.
In the Pacific Coast League:
Trabuco Hills 70, Costa Mesa 51--Trabuco Hills led by only one point at halftime, 38-37, but outscored Costa Mesa 32-14 in the second half and won easily at Trabuco Hills. Gordon McNeill led Trabuco Hills with 19 points and 11 rebounds, and guard Ted Colburn added 13 points. Guard Jack Jones led Costa Mesa with 12.
Woodbridge 63, Laguna Beach 33--The Warriors (6-0, 16-5) led 40-6 at halftime. Woodbridge had 14 steals, and was led by Vince Bryan who scored 17 points and Adam Keefe who had 14. Laguna Beach’s Scott Herdman, averaging 21 points on the season, to 3 points. Laguna Beach is 2-4 in league.
Laguna Hills 49, Orange 47--Rick Kawada made the front ends of two different one-and-one opportunities in the final 16 seconds for the Hawks. He made the first foul shot with 16 seconds left and missed the second.
Orange missed a shot and Kawada was fouled again, this time with eight seconds left. He made the first but missed and the Panthers missed a last-second shot.
Chris Sheff scored 13 and Mike Smeads 14 for Laguna Hills. Rusty Olson scored 19 and Dan Adams 13 for the Orange.
In the Express League:
Gethesmane 88, Claremont 30--Robbie Fry scored 31 points to lead the Crusaders past the Cougars at Paramont. Claremont of Garden Grove was led by Tom Patraw’s 15 points.
In girls’ basketball:
Leffingwell Christian 30, Newport Christian 21--Despite a game-high 11 points from Danielle Everett, the Conquerors lost the Academy League game at Newport Christian. Leffingwell Christian is 3-4 in league and 6-0 overall, Newport Christian 2-6 and 2-9.
La Quinta 65, Garden Grove 27--The Aztecs made it seven straight victories by defeating the Argonauts in a Garden Grove League game at Garden Grove. Senior point guard Kris Takayana scored 16 points and had 11 assists, and Laura Anderson added 14 points for La Quinta (6-0, 13-5)
Marion Mendoza led Garden Grove (4-2 in league) with 13 points.
