More than 400 students from high schools across California will attend a Model United Nations Conference at Mission Viejo High School Friday through next Sunday.

“For the three days that they (student delegates) will be here, they will be debating and working together to find real solutions to real world problems,” said Robert A. Gautney, a Mission Viejo High student and program chairman for the event.

“The students will represent a specific country, and each student will be the ambassador from that country,” Gautney added. “Representing the policies of that country, he or she will do the best that they can do to find a workable solution, in their country’s interest, to real world political and social problems.”

A debate on President Reagan’s proposed Strategic Defense Initiative, popularly referred to as “Star Wars,” will be among the events at the conference.

Mission Viejo High’s Model U.N., under the direction of its student secretary general, Eric Aved, and student undersecretary general, Peggy Cordes, are hosts for the statewide conference.
