Alex Baumann of Canada, the world record-holder in the event, swam a world-best time of 1 minute 58.22 seconds in the short course 200-meter individual medley in a heat at the Ontario University Athletic Assn. swimming meet at St. Catharines, Canada.
The time was called a world best because it was set in a 25-meter pool. World records must be set in Olympic-sized 50-meter pools.
