John Stevens of Grosse Point, Mich., and his 42-foot Joubert-Nivelt yacht, Sprint, won the International Offshore Rule Division of the St. Petersburg-to-Boca Grande in Florida, launching the 42nd annual Southern Ocean Racing Conference series.
Competing in IOR Class 3 (42-45 feet), Sprint, of the Bayview (Detroit) Yacht Club crossed the line shortly after 11:30 a.m. and had a corrected time of 17 hours 54 minutes 45 seconds. Sailmaker Lowell North of San Diego was also aboard Sprint.
The first boat to cross the line was Kialoa, a 79-foot Frers owned by Jim Kilroy of Newport Beach, Calif. She came in at 8:11.51 and corrected out to 20 hours 8 minutes 55 seconds to win IOR Class 1.
America’s Cup skipper Dennis Conner, aboard the Italian yacht Il Moro di Venezia II finished third in IOR Class 1 with a corrected time of 20:14.59.
